And I think we’ve got the answer.
People are often afraid to do a “trash the dress” photo session after the big day. From fear of ruining such a big investment to concern for keeping it nice so your daughter can wear it someday, the fear can definitely be a deterrent.
While it’s true, some “trash the dress” sessions can be quite rough on your wedding dress, you can most certainly have a “trash the dress” without actually trashing your dress. We like to call it “dress unfriendly” but not exactly “trashed.”
It’s also important to take into consideration a few things in making a decision to trash YOUR dress or not:
Yes, your dress will likely get dirty – Is that a death-sentence for the dress? No. In fact, JoAnne and I did a “trash the dress” in the Pacific Ocean on the Monterey Peninsula the week after our wedding, and her dress, though filthy with sand and seawater at the time, looks perfectly fine now after a visit to the cleaners.
No your daughter will likely not want to wear your dress – We all like to think we’re pretty stylish, but the odds are, your daughter is going to have a personality and style all her own, and it will almost definitely NOT coincide with yours. Did you wear YOUR mothers dress for the wedding? And even if you wanted to, are you both the same size? Who wants to pay for extensive alterations?
I say: Enjoy the most expensive dress you’ll ever wear once and get some more mileage out of it. Sure it’s gonna get a little dirty, but why not have another set of fantastic images to relive how amazing you looked in your dress all those years ago?
So go play in the ocean, roll in the sand, romp around the desert, ride a motorcycle and get some fun out of your wedding gown!
Here are a few pictures of inspiration – From the runaway bride hopping in a big rig at a truck stop (totally dress friendly), blowing up a house whilst trying to make dinner (a little rough on the dress maybe), sitting on a filthy mattress on LA’s notorious Skid Row (Tetanus anyone?) to laying washed up on shore (a little dark, but still fun); A “trash the dress” shoot is a fun way to show off your style without all the pressure of your wedding day.
